Versailles, 1697

In 1697, after two years of writing, the extremely serious writer Charles Perrault, then 69 years of age, and adversary of La Fontaine, Nicolas Boileau and La Bruyère in the Quarrel of the Ancients and Moderns, published the first edition of the collection under the name of his third son, Pierre Darmancour. He dedicated it to 'Mademoiselle', the duchess Elisabeth-Charlotte d'Orléans, niece of Louis XIV.

The original manuscript is preserved in the Morgan Library and Museum (New York) since 1953.

More than three centuries old, the manuscript of Charles Perrault's Tales of Mother Goose is a true treasure.

Charles Perrault's Tales: the manuscript


Never before published, the manuscript is a veritable treasure that has remained intact for over three centuries. Included : BluebeardSleeping BeautyPuss in BootsLittle Red Riding Hood, among others.


                                          


Charles Perrault's manuscript is composed of five of his beloved tales (Bluebeard, Sleeping Beauty, The Master Cat or Puss in Boots, Little Red Riding Hood, and Diamonds and Toads).

Two years later, Perrault added three new tales to the collection (Cinderella, Riquet with the Tuft, and Hop-o'-My-Thumb).
With these additional tales, the collection adopted a new title title: Stories or Fairy Tales from Past Times with Morals.
